“To delight our customers with the highest quality products and continue to improve the customer experience at every step...To be a force for good.”
Re-harvesting wheatgrass reduces its nutrition by approximately 60%. Wheatgrass Depot has a “one-cut” rule to always provide the most nutritious product. Since wheatgrass nutrition drops off dramatically for the second growth never buy from a grower that harvests more than once per tray. If a grower has harvested before the tops of the grass will be flat rather than pointy. It is also important to ask retailers that pre-bottle shots of wheatgrass juice if they practice the one cut rule.
All of our greenhouse products are USDA-certified organic through the CCOF, one of the most renowned and strict certification organizations in the world. Safety of our products is the highest priority. Post-germination, irrigation water samples are sent to a 3rd-party laboratory for the testing of potentially dangerous pathogens, such as E. coli and Salmonella. We receive these water reports prior to any harvest. Water samples are tested every time seeds are sprouted, ensuring that our final products are always safe for human consumption. Lab results are available upon request. In addition, final product packaging contains a “lot number” code, which allows for full traceability from seed to sprout.
A native of Midland, Michigan, David Fromhold first became interested in the benefits of wheatgrass juice after attending a seminar by motivation speaker Tony Robbins at the age of 16. However, he did not realize the true power of wheatgrass juice until years later while recovering from an accident. Fromhold fell off a horse and fractured his neck; he was unable to exercise at all during the recovery period. Instead, he focused his recovery on how he perceived food—as either fuel to help his body to recover or something that could get in the way. After 3 months of a healthful diet including wheatgrass juice, Fromhold’s cholesterol dropped more than 100 points and his triglycerides dropped below 100. As his doctor said, “Your blood work is basically textbook perfect.”
Fromhold moved to Florida to pursue a degree in Business from Lynn University and later an MBA in Business/Marketing. During this time, he realized his passion for promoting healthy lifestyles was his calling in life. The statistics in the U.S. are staggering: 1 out 2 men and 1 out of 3 women will develop cancer, and if current trends continue, 1 out of 3 people born in 2000 will develop diabetes. Fromhold has dedicated his life to combating this epidemic.
Fromhold was so passionate about having fresh wheatgrass available that, in his condo, he designed and built a greenhouse, which was fully enclosed, with full spectrum lighting, a water retention system, and an air circulation system.
While working on his greenhouse and speaking with local growers, he was offered a job at one of the largest wheatgrass and sprout growers in South Florida. This position offered the opportunity to act as an apprentice and learn from the best, and it eventually led to Fromhold becoming the greenhouse manager. However, to realize his dream, he knew that he would have to open his own greenhouse and develop his unique distribution model. Moving back to Michigan gave him the opportunity to start Wheatgrass Depot and continue his belief that wheatgrass juice should be as easy to get as a cup of coffee.
Fromhold shares his knowledge from more than a decade of experience in wheatgrass growing through educational classes, including information on supplies, such as juicers, growing trays, and a variety of seeds, for customers wishing to grow their own greens.
Launched with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in February 2015, Wheatgrass Depot is an Ann Arbor-based company offering USDA-certified organic wheatgrass, sunflower greens, and pea greens at near-wholesale prices via local distributors, called HUBs. Our HUB distribution system allows one greenhouse to serve the needs of our customers throughout the state. Wheatgrass Depot partners with these HUBs for fast, efficient delivery and to foster a mutually beneficial relationship. Inspired by his small-town Michigan upbringing, Fromhold believes strongly in the value of cooperation. HUBs benefit from increased customer traffic, goodwill, profit sharing, and the ability to develop stronger relationships with their customers. Wheatgrass Depot further strengthens these relationships via its “supporters.” Supporters are businesses that share similar ideals but do not meet the HUB criteria (e.g., cold storage, ample parking, and convent hours). Examples of supporters include but are not limited to yoga studios, chiropractors, weight-loss centers, local farmers, gyms, and health practitioners. Supporters also benefit from profit sharing and goodwill. Wheatgrass Depot also strives for mutual benefit with all our partners through joint marketing via social media and fliers. Businesses interested in becoming a HUB or supporter are encouraged to contact Wheatgrass Depot via the information on our “Contact” page.
In addition to strengthening local businesses, Wheatgrass Depot’s business model allows for delivery of the freshest possible products, as if our customers had just harvested wheatgrass and sprouts from their own greenhouses. Upon receiving an order, Wheatgrass Depot uses its proprietary software to guarantee delivery of the customer’s products to a local HUB within 24 hours of harvest. The system also maintains the cold storage chain (which optimizes the product’s shelf life). HUBS allow Wheatgrass Depot to reduces its carbon footprint and avoid expensive direct shipping costs to the customer—our customers pay for high quality products...not shipping! Furthermore, Wheatgrass Depot maintains low overhead costs; our unique business model translates into near-wholesale prices for customers.
